All groups should be like the Super Furry Animals: a melting pot of influences bubbling with seemingly endless, effortless creativity. No two SFA songs sound the same, and most of their tracks use up more ideas than youΓÇÖll hear on the average album. Perhaps their cleverest trick, though, is to be constantly experimenting without ever sounding ΓÇ£experimentalΓÇ¥. When a band makes albums as glorious as these guys, a singles collection canΓÇÖt ever be a true Best of... but it does offer a genuine peek into the sheer sweep of their oeuvre. The psychedelic surf pop of Rings Around the World, the fuzzy punk of God! Show Me Magic, the life-affirming balladry of Hello Sunshine, not to mention Demons, which musically references at least four different Bowie albums. When most bands hopefully subtitle these collections The Singles, Volume One, itΓÇÖs a sure sign that the hits have actually dried up, but if you were to bet on any band to come back in five years with an equally brilliant Volume Two, it would be the Super Furries.
